In July 2024 the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ran a headline that we did not write and still cannot quite believe: “The region’s best new pizza joint is in a suburban Shop ’n Save.” They meant this one. Rocco’s Slice House operates right inside our East Pittsburgh Street store, turning out New York-style pies and by-the-slice cuts Tuesday through Saturday, 11am to 7pm. You can order a whole pie for dinner, or grab two slices while somebody else finishes the grocery list.

It is a genuinely strange and wonderful thing to have a destination pizza counter inside a neighborhood grocery store, and it changed the character of this location. People come for the pizza and leave with groceries. People come for groceries and leave with pizza. We are fine with either.

Sushi, rolled here, not trucked in

The other thing this store does that the others do not is sushi — rolled fresh in-house, in this building, every day. Not delivered pre-made in a refrigerated case overnight. If you have been disappointed by grocery store sushi before, it was probably the kind that traveled. Ours goes from the counter to the case, and what does not sell fresh does not sit.

Between the pizza counter, the sushi case, and a deli running hot foods and homemade sides, this is the store to hit when nobody at home wants to cook and nobody wants the same thing. That happens more often than anyone admits.

Getting here

730 East Pittsburgh Street, on the east side of Greensburg heading out toward Hempfield. Easy in and out, full parking lot, and open every day 7am to 9pm. Rocco’s keeps its own hours — Tuesday through Saturday, 11am to 7pm — so check those before making a special trip for pizza.

This store sits in a genuinely residential stretch, which means most of our customers are walking in from a few streets over rather than driving in from an interchange. We know a lot of them by name. Our meat counter cuts to order like the others, the bakery runs fresh daily, and the produce department gets stocked every morning. Same family, same standards — and the best slice in Westmoreland County near the front door.
