The store on Route 66

Drive north out of downtown Greensburg on Main Street and you are on Pennsylvania Route 66 — the road that carries traffic up toward New Alexandria and Delmont, and the road this store has sat on for decades. Everybody local calls it Route 66 Shop ’n Save, and after enough years of people saying it, that became the name. It is the Route 66 store to everyone in Hempfield Township.

This is the store people drive past twice a day, which shapes what we keep on the shelf. Mornings are coffee, donuts, and a fast trip through the middle. Afternoons are dinner — somebody grabbing a rotisserie chicken and a bag of salad on the way home from work. We stock and staff for that rhythm rather than pretending every store is the same.

Where the gobs come from

If our bakery has a reputation anywhere, it starts here. Scratch donuts come out early and are usually gone before lunch. Alongside them are the things people actually ask for by name: peanut butter cookies, brownies, and gobs — the western Pennsylvania kind, two cake rounds with icing in the middle, which nobody outside this part of the state seems to call by the right word. Birthday cakes get decorated in this bakery too, by people whose handwriting you will recognize if you order more than once.

The butcher shop is a real one. There is a counter, there are butchers behind it, and if you want something cut differently than what is in the case — thicker chops, a roast tied, chicken deboned — ask and it gets done while you finish shopping. That is not a program we invented for the website; it is simply how a grocery store used to work, and we never stopped.

Getting here

990 North Main Street, on the northbound side, with a full lot and no meters. Coming from downtown Greensburg it is a straight run up Main. Coming off Route 30 you will hit us within a couple of minutes heading north. We are open every single day, 7am to 9pm, holidays included unless we tell you otherwise on the door.

Steve Woods runs this store. He is here, not at a corporate office three states away, and if something goes wrong with an order he is the person who fixes it. We are members of the Westmoreland County Chamber of Commerce, we sponsor teams whose parents shop here, and every dollar spent in this building stays a lot closer to home than it would at a chain.
